A Video Installation Commemorating the Australian Community During the Orroral Valley Bushfire.
Around the end of January 2020, the “Orroral Valley Bushfire” started in Namadgi National Park, which burnt down extensive bushland. My family and I were living in the southern suburbs at the time. The fires came close to that area but luckily died out a few kilometres away.
This year marks 5 years since the fire started. Emergency services and the community were well prepared for the fire because of what happened in the 2003 bushfires, which took everyone at the time by surprise. Through found footage, archived media, and personal testimonies, this is a video installation that highlights the ways in which the Canberra community came together to rebuild, support, and overcome during this fire, which was considered way more destructive than what happened in 2020.
